Happy 2015, friends!!!! I hope you celebrated well and are having a great first day of the year.
This should probably by my obligatory “new year’s resolutions” post, but I’m trying a little something new this year.
Like most people, I do (as usual) have goals going into the new year. I know the idea of having New Year’s resolutions have become sort of cliche lately, but whatever…I like any chance to have a clean slate and rekindle my motivation in certain areas of life.
This year I have my goals, but I’m also trying to cast an overall vision into 2015. I’ve seen others choose a word for their year and I always loved that idea.
But going into this new year, it seems that a word has actually chosen me.
SIMPLIFY.
You see, I’m a multi-tasker by nature. That can be one of my biggest strengths, but over the past year I’ve noticed that it’s also becoming one of my biggest weaknesses.
I think of the quote - “you can do anything, but not everything.” Well, I’m an everything person. I think that just because I CAN do something…and I may even be quite good at it…that I should automatically do it.
But the truth is that the more things I take on and the more thin I spread myself, the less I do things out a place of excellence.
So this year, I want to do fewer things with excellence rather than a ton of things just okay.
This is definitely going to be a challenge for me, to say the least. As someone who has multiple jobs and streams of income, plus a handful of things I volunteer for and do out of sheer interest/passion…I have no idea where to start cutting things out. And don’t even get me started on how I’m going to learn what to say “no” to when new opportunities come along…
…but I’ve got to start somewhere, and the word SIMPLIFY seems to be the perfect motivation to make this change and take things to the next level in my life.
(I’ve got to say - I love the idea of having a word for my year so much that I may even apply new words to specific months. We’ll see!)
Oh, and yes - you can definitely expect seeing this word of 2015 on an upcoming Speakable necklace. Naturally!

p.s. I made an impromptu vlog the other day - you can check it out over on my YouTube channel! More vlogs to come 🙂

What’s your word for 2015? Does “simplify” resonate with you as well?

I can totally relate to needing to simplify. That was my word of the year two years ago and it was SO hard! I’m on the other end of things now and I feel much more balanced. Instead of picking a word or making resolutions this year, my husband thought of picking attitudes that we want to have (e.g., patience, hospitality).
ah, love that idea!
I absolutely love the idea of having a word of the year. I think mine would be along the lines of ‘IMPERFECT’, because my perfectionist ways really can turn a simple task into an absolute chore!!
Happy new year, lovely xx

that’s a good one! perfection is boring anyway 😉 xoxo
Love this!!
love using a word instead of resolutions! i’m planning on picking a word to focus on each month this year. not sure what january’s is going to be yet!
This is great! I believe it is extra hard for “creative folks” like you and me to simplify and cut things out, because there is so much swirling around in our brains! Still, it is not an impossible goal at all, instead, it’s a very good and reasonable one. You have me thinking about what my “word” of the year, and possibly months, too will be!

Oh my God, yes. I’m a doer of ALL THE THINGS even when I don’t really want to. I mean, in the moment I say “yes”, I want to do Project X, but then a few hours/days/weeks later I find myself feeling spread thin and overwhelmed. I also tend to take on more obligations when I’m stressed, because it gives me this odd [read: false] sense that I’m in control. I’m due in March and it’s taken all my willpower to NOT sign up for/volunteer for/apply for/take on a million new things. Cue: breathing into a paper bag.
I just started (and almost finished, ha) reading a book called The Simplicity Project by Corie Clark. You have GOT to read it!!!
great word. i can def relate to this, as i love everything and spread myself thin and want to do it all and have it all, etc. simplifying and finding happiness in that is a great goal.
I’m not one for resolutions or goals, mostly because my Type-a personality freaks out if I can’t stay on track; but, I try to live each day with KINDNESS. Being kind, polite, and have a heart full of love makes me the most happy.
That’s always a good word to live by! love that 🙂
i love the idea of having a word for the year. i did this in 2013 (my word was ‘fearless’) and enjoyed it!
Fearless is a great one!!
Yes, simplify works for me as well. I would like to continue going to the gym 5 to 6 days per week, doing well at work, eating healthy and good time management as well.
yo go girl! I need to step up my gym game too 😉
Ohh I think simplify is a really good word and such an important lesson to learn! I’m constantly working on the saying no thing, especially when it means that I’m pushing myself too hard just because I don’t want to let someone down. Yikes. I am still figuring out my word for 2015! I’m actually doing a devo on the Bible app about it! Can’t wait to see what it is.
that’s awesome!! what’s the app? just “The Bible” app?
Yes, the Bible app and the plan is called “One word that will change your life”! Hope you enjoy it!
